Summary "This collection of commercially produced ceramic vases explored the natural material properties of porcelain clay and how those characteristics could be manipulated in an innovative way using mass-production techniques. A development of an earlier project 'It's Your Fault Vase', which successfully combined the qualities of handmade and mass produced in one object as a design imperative, the challenge here was to achieve the same uniqueness, while adhering to the technical requirements to produce an entirely mass-produced, wholly commercial product.

During the green stage in ceramic production works are dried in carefully controlled environments in order to prevent damage. However this project took advantage of faults that can occur during drying to create a vase with an unusual quality of material and form. This way of working had been done by hand in the earlier investigation, but required a new process to be developed to achieve this same quality in the mass production process without diminishing the essence of the design. The outcome was a commercially manufactured object where the qualities of mass-produced and handcrafted were successfully integrated within the design.

Produced by Rosenthal, a prestigious manufacturer with a long history of working with top designers including Tapio Wirkkala, Walter Gropius, Jasper Morrison and Ron Arad, 'Opening' was exhibited in 'Focus Energy', The Design Centre, Stuttgart, Germany 2006 and awarded a 'Focus in Silver' (Baden-Württemburg International Design Award); in DesignPhiladelphia 2007, Philadelphia USA; and State of Design Festival, Royal Exhibition Building, Melbourne 2008. Reviewed in Azure and Metropolis."
