Abstract This paper examines the 'network' approach to providing public transport in semirural areas, through case studies of semi-rural parts of the Swiss Cantons of Zürich and Graubünden. The importance of this issue is increasing in most developed nations, as the share of the population living in dense cities declines. Suburban areas are growing, but so also are ex-urban and semi-rural regions.
