Abstract Mechanisms giving rise to swing and reverse swing of a cricket ball will be identified. The paper explains how transverse force directions may be deduced from observed wake directions and explains how Reynolds number similarity can be used with low velocity smoke trails equivalent to visualise high-speed bowling.
