Abstract This paper persents a method of topological stiffness optimization for periodic structures. The periodicity of structure structure layout is realized by creating a representative unit cell that is to be duplicated. The bi-directional evolutionary topology optimization (BESO) is used to serach for the stiffest design for the representative unit cell. Numerical examples are shown in this context to demonstrate the capability and effectiveness of the present method. Results show that the BESO approach is capable of solving design problems for periodic structures by finding optimal conceptual designs.
