Abstract This paper reports the development of a platform for measuring platelet function and thrombus growth dynamics based on localized micro-strain rate gradients. Chemical and mechanical factors are critical in platelet aggregation but the mechaniccal factors are poorly understood. We present the design, hydrodynamic characterization and experimental results of a novel microvascular mimetic device that generates a controlled dynamic mechanical stress to induce localized platelet aggregation. This platform will have long term utility in the diagnosis of platelet functional defects in patients suffering from cardiovascular disease as well as utility as a screening platform of drugs targeting thrombosis induced by hemodynamic mechanisms.
