Abstract The field of industrial relations has undergone rapid change since the I980s. Much of this change has been driven by the increasing intemationalisation of the economies of the world and the impact of new technologies. As the world has changed, so too has industrial relations, yet, there has been continuity. My central argument is that industrial relations has an inherently legal character, and that as a practically oriented scholarship, labour law should be accorded its appropriate place.
