Abstract Integrated Urban Water Management (IUWM) is an emerging practice which involves, among other things, the integrated planning of water supply, sewerage and drainage services, and consideration of alternative water sources such as wastewater and stormwater reuse projects. This research has aimed to deepen and increase the understanding of the IUWM concept, and the practicalities of its implementation within Melbourne. The primary methods of the research have included consultation with 43 experts from 25 organisations, an industry survey, and seven in-depth IUWM project planning case studies. Over its seven body chapters, the research covers the meaning and origins of IUWM, puts forward conceptual models for understanding IUWM planning, uses the case studies to explore the practicalities of implementing IUWM projects, and puts forward practical recommendations for future efforts. It is found that IUWM is a loosely defined concept, with many associated objectives and methods. The in-depth case study analysis provided demonstrates that implementing IUWM is extremely challenging and does not always work out as planned. Therefore it is recommended that potential project risks need to be taken more seriously in the planning of future IUWM projects, and some form of regional collaboration on policy and strategy, between all relevant stakeholders, is required in order to enable the effective implementation of IUWM.
