Abstract The electrodeposition of metals from room temperature ionic liquids (RTIL) has received significant attention due to their unique properties which have been shown to control the surface morphology and quality of the metal film. In this work we report on the electrodeposition of silver from commercially available ILs such as ([BMIm][BF4]) and N-methyl-N-butyl-pyrrolidinium-bis-(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([C4mpyr][TFSI]) using readily available silver salts such as silver tetrafluoroborate (AgBF4) and silver triflate (AgOTf). The electrodeposition mechanism is determined from chronoamperometry experiments and the surface morphology is investigated with scanning electron microscopy.
