Abstract Latin American political journalism is in crisis. This is bad news, especially when a more assertive, adversarial, critical and independent political journalism is needed more than ever in the Latin American media. It is true this is not new. Political reporting has traditionally been either hijacked or supressed by democratic and non-democratic governments alike. And while the latter resorted to deadly measures; the former has resorted to financial and legal actions. What is also true this time around - in the post-dictatorship context- is that political journalism has been rapidly losing its key function, to make the political class accountable and the political discurse healthier. This article is a meta-assessment into the reasons for ·the decline in political journalism and how this is affecting the quality of democracy in the region.
