Summary This paper is drawn from a longstanding interest I have in the area of literacy assessment and recent research investigating teacher judgement. In addition, as the Chair of the Human Research and Ethics Sub-Committee (HRESC) for the Faculty of Education, Language and Community Services (FELCS) at RMIT University, I am involved in assisting faculty researchers in addressing the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) guidelines pertaining to the participation of human beings in research studies. My paper highlights some of the ethical considerations that need to be embedded in the professional practices of researchers engaged in any inquiry involving human beings.
