Abstract The ever expanding role of the educator in the information age allows less time for dedicated literacy teachers to reflect upon and research their practice. Yet the role of teacher/researcher can inform the educator in profound ways. This paper will describe some of the wisdom gained as a literacy educator as she engaged in a doctoral research study that explored how children understand the world. It will also explore the multimodal climate necessary to enhance oral communication and higher level thinking.
