Abstract This paper presets the application of wide-area controllers on Australian power system. The proposed approach is designed as a multi-step process, where coherent areas are identified and the estimation of aggregated states are obtained using phasor measurement units (PMUs) and non-linear Kalman filter. The wide-area controller is then designed to improve both first swing and post-fault damping stability of the system using available controllable assets in the network, such as FACTS devices. The simulations are performed on the simplified and full model of the Australian national grid, and the controllers have been designed and applied on the available Static Var Compensators (SVCs) in the network. The results show that wide-area controlled SVCs can improve the first swing stability and damp the post-fault oscillations of the Australian network which results in improving the utilization of available transmission network and the overall system security.
