Abstract/Summary Research that is reported in the accompanying research reports (3 to 6) was conducted in four different local areas in Sri Lanka and in an area of northern Chennai where residents from eight former fishing villages were eventually relocated into two adjoining permanent settlements. Each area and its local community or communities can be taken as a case study for this research and this report presents a profile of the people and places in each of the case study areas. This helps to set the context for what took place in each area in the wake of the tsunami.
