Abstract/Summary This study was an extensive program evaluation and social impact assessment of the Stronger Families and Communities Strategy - an Australian Government initiative from 2000 - 2004 to strengthen Indigenous families and communities. The research was based on in-depth qualitative case studies and face-to-face consultations with project staff and project participants. The study examined the factors that appeared to support and inhibit the efforts of the Strategy and provided an analysis of the successes of some projects and the frustrations experienced by others. Commissioned by the Department of Family and Community Services (FaCS), the research findings provided the Government with evidence for future initiatives and programs highlighting, in particular, the importance of efforts to ensure longer-term engagement, links to practical project activities outside of the workshop, and attention to healing from individual and community trauma. This report has been cited by the Communities and Families Clearinghouse (CAFCA) 2011 Guide to Working with Indigenous children, families and communities and was used as a resource in the evaluation of the Cape York Welfare Trial.
