Abstract Based on the Fredlund and Xing (1994) equation, this paper presents a new water retention equation that takes into account the effect of initial dry density on the water retention behavior. Besides, a new strength equation is proposed to predict the shear strength of unsaturated soils under different stress states based on the proposed water retention equation. The comparisons between measured and predicted shear strengths of unsaturated soils are employed to validate the proposed strength equation.
