Abstract Due to the increase of construction wastes and end-of-life tyres, recycling of the waste concrete and scrape tyre have become an important issue around the world. Therefore, the aim of this research is to study the effect of crumb rubber on strength properties of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) as base/subbase pavement layers. In this study, crumb rubber with particle size of 10-15 mm was added to 20 mm RCA at 0.5, 1 and 2% by weight percentages of the RCA, and the strength properties of the samples were examined by unconfined compression strength as well as resilient modulus tests. It was concluded that addition of crumb rubber resulted in decreasing the UCS and resilient modulus, and increasing the toughness in terms of failure strain and deformability index.
