Abstract Policy makers and service providers need information on the extent of homelessness in Australia, as well as the geographical spread of the population. This article provides this information, using data from the 2001 Australian Census of Population and Housing. J The census data was supplemented by information from the nationalSMP data collection on homeless people using Supported Accommodation Assistance Program (SAAP) services.2 The analysis also uses data from the second national census of homeless school students (Chamberlain & MacKenzie 2002).
