Abstract Teacher education providers have an important role to play in supporting pre-service teachers develop knowledge and skills to use ICT in their practice. In Australia, an increasing regulatory environment means that teacher education providers need to design programs that target the attainment of ICT-specific professional standards. One area that pre-service teachers can experiment with, and apply their ICT skills and knowledge, is within the placement component of their programs. This paper reports on a goal-based, coaching approach to placement; in which preservice teachers identified an eLearning goal that they then enacted on placement with the support of a school-based coach. Two case studies describe the experience of two pre-service teachers as they set, reviewed and enacted their goals to examine the role of ICT in education during their placement.
