Summary From L2 research, we know that involving raters in scale revision has known benefits such as accounting for rater-related factors in writing (e.g. Barkaoui, 2011), providing opportunities for raters to reacquaint themselves with the construct in their context by questioning and discussing with peers (e.g. Harsch and Martin 2012) or for raters to better understand exemplars and become trainers (e.g. Sasaki & Hirose, 1999). However, despite suggestions from Cohen (1994) that the rater perspective should be communicated to stake-holders as part of the test validation, there remains scant research towards participation in L1 scale revisions, subsequent re-training and moderation. In response, this study reports on the views of eighteen experienced raters, ranging in educational and professional profiles, who were canvassed in relation to their involvement in a process of scale revision and development, and their participation in the subsequent re-training and moderation on the application of the revised scales for a Graduate Skills Assessment L1 writing task (see Ducasse & Hill, 2015) on the Saber Pro. The task, written in Spanish in Colombia, is an essay, that does not require specialised content knowledge.
