Abstract The indoor environmental quality (IEQ) of healthcare facilities is a multi-criteria and multi-stakeholder issue. The effective management strategies for IEQ require accounting all the IEQ parameters and involving all the building stakeholders. The multi-zonal building designs of hospital buildings and the diverse occupants' nature make the management of IEQ extremely challenging. Despite of this, there is a limited understanding of IEQ management practices in healthcare facilities. Therefore, the aim of the research paper is to report on the IEQ management practices in Australian healthcare facilities. With the help of six hospitals in Victoria, Australia, the paper reports on the current practices used to provide and manage IEQ in hospital buildings. Findings point to the role of facility managers (FM) in the provision and management of IEQ and management barriers and challenges are highlighted. The paper suggests that a strategic approach to manage IEQ is essential rather than the common practice of con-forming to compliance requirements and providing solutions as operational problems arise.
