Abstract This article deals with a new generalization of the Chen distribution called the transmuted Chen lifetime distribution. This distribution is capable of modelling bathtub-shaped instantaneous failure rate functions. The new transmuted lifetime distribution is developed using the quadratic rank transmutation map technique studied by Shaw et al. [23]. Various structural properties of the proposed model are derived including the explicit expressions for the moments, incomplete moments, moment generating function, Rényi entropy, mean deviation, Bonferroni and Lorenz curves and the moments of order statistics. We discuss the estimation of the parameters using maximum likelihood and obtain the expected information matrix. The potentiality of new model is illustrated based on the strengths glass of fibres data.
