Abstract The role of the internet and mobile communication systems in the development of multimedia access is discussed. The importance of the user and not the terminal as the final point in the multimedia consumption chain is emphasized by the importance given to universal multimedia experience (UME) as opposed to universal multimedia access (UMA). In the context of the UMEs the emphasis is on signal processing related developments.
