Abstract The teacher or conductor may be the only voice adviser the singer has, and thus a duty of care rests on any leader of singers to know the qualities of vocal health and the signs of strain and abuse. This article sets out features of a healthy speaking and singing voice and describes some 'bumps in the throat' that can result from strain, abuse or illness.
