Abstract Many countries have now introduced some form of data protection regulation which provides a minimum set of principles to be followed by organisations when collecting and using personal information. Most laws operate on a national basis, but websites can operate across national boundaries and collect personal data from users from different countries. The paper examines eight music download websites with digital rights management systems to assess their statedpolicies for handling the personal information collected from users and subscribers. Its study explores what the websites state they will do with this personal information once they have collected it and assesses whether the stated practices are consistent with the data protection regulations, if applicable.
