Abstract The increasing levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere present an enormous challenge. This article argues that the weaknesses of the market-based preoccupations of most policy respondents do not address the fundamental issues and can have the effect of reproducing the causes of increased carbon emissions. A consideration of Marx's concepts of use value and exchange value and the fate of environmental values within capitalism leads to a quite different perspective, emphasising the benefits of non-market socialism as a means to establish environmental sustainability.
