Abstract With sustainability a growing priority for metropolitan governments, this paper explores the reliance on the notion of place embedded in many urban policies. In doing so, approaches to sustainability are reframed away from the figure of the consuming, selfreflexive decision-maker and towards place as a unit of intervention into transitions to more sustainable ways of living. This paper activates the notion of place as a means to help us understand whether and how metropolitan attempts to encourage ‘sustainability’ work, particularly in the public realm. It argues that by using the concepts of affect and power, place as a concept can make a useful contribution to the evaluation of urban sustainability strategies.
